Welcome to First Grade!

I am very excited to be starting a new year in first grade! During the year the students will be engaged in many hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and strategy based instruction in both reading and math.

The students will be learning in an environment that promotes respect for peers and adults, positive reinforcement, and working toward individual goals. Students have the opportunity to  work at their own level, making them feel successful in the classroom.

January and February

In Reading we will be starting a new theme and reading stories about in general about Maps. We will continue focusing on our reading strategies including: Eagle Eye, Chunky Monkey, and Jabber the Reteller.

In Religion we will focus on being nice to one another, apostles and church family!

In Math,we are focusing on place value by identifying tens and ones.

In Social Studies we will be working on map skills that correlate with our reading themes.

In Science we will be researching polar animals, particularly the penguin. We will be writing penguin stories about the facts we learn throughout the months.

We will spend the next month researching the lives of famous African Americans, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Ruby Bridges to name a few. WE will read stories and investigate online resources to learn how they impacted our world and culture.

Reminder-

Popcorn Reading due end of the month! Help your child read 10 books to earn a kernel for our popcorn chart. Once we have 100 kernels, we will get a Popcorn Party!
