The first grade religion curriculum emphasizes God’s love for us and His many gifts including creation, the sacraments, and His son Jesus.
The reading program places emphasis on developing independent readers through the use of strategy instruction, skill instruction, phonics instruction, and small group guided reading.
The language arts curriculum focuses on handwriting, spelling, and English.
The math curriculum places emphasis on addition, subtraction, problem solving, money, time, and measurement.
The science curriculum is thematic and focuses on plants, animals, and weather.
The thematic social studies curriculum centers on families, communities, and map skills.
The first grade travels to the Weller Center to participate in hands-on activities where students learn about the five senses, being a good friend, and healthy habits. Students also visit local theaters to view plays. At the end of the year, students hike to a local park. Participation in a first grade prayer service and a talent show are other highlights.
In every classroom, students utilize computers and electronic whiteboards, working both individually and in groups. At learning centers and during guided reading, students take advantage of interactive cross-curricular websites that provide enrichment activities to complement and support instruction in the classroom. Imagination Station, a computer-based reading program, is implemented during assigned lab times, allowing students to participate in individualized interactive reading activities which effectively meet their needs.
