You will be taking
this journey with a partner. You and your partner are responsible for
specific activities. You will work both as a group and individually. You
will both be graded on the final product.
The two roles for this activity are:
-
The Captain:
The person who does the searching on the Internet during your journey.
The captain guides the journey through the sites in search
of information and makes sure that the first mate is recording
the necessary details of the trip.
-
The First Mate:
The person who records all of the details during the journey. The first
mate is also responsible for keeping the team on task so that they
arrive at the end of their journey on time.
1.
To
prepare for your journey you are going to conduct research about America
and what your life will be like. Included is
a questionnaire to help get you ready. You can find the
questionnaire in the resources section. Please read over all the questions before
you begin. After you have read through the questions you will begin your
research by going to the websites included in the list of resources. The
answers to these questions will be found there and will help you
understand the new life you are about to start.
2. After you have visited these sites
and have found all the information that you need you are ready to record
your journey. Remember that your journal needs to be in first person.
Make it as realistic as possible, and remember to include the date (example: September 6, 1871). Use the list of
websites at the end of this section to accumulate information needed to
develop your journal. Both partners will need to work together to
complete the journal.
-
How to make your journal: This information should be recorded
using Microsoft Word. Take your time and try to create an entry that
looks old, as if it were written by hand. You are trying to recreate
the feeling of a journal. You may want to include pictures that you find
from the Internet such as maps of your country of origin, a picture of
your native flag, and information about your background (currency,
ethnic foods, language you speak). Some information you may want
to include in your journal would be a boarding pass, identification,
and inspection papers. You can either
make these items or find pictures of them on the Internet.
3.
Using the information that you gained
from the websites, you will include the following items in your
journal:
-
Journal Entry #1: Create
an imaginary immigrant. Your job is to describe this person. You
will tell where they are traveling from? What is their name? (be
sure that it reflects their nationality-the country they are from-
use the websites to do this) What is their age? What is the year of
their journey? What is their occupation? Who
are they traveling with if they are not alone? Provide some
information about those people.
-
Journal Entry #2: Describe your journey. How long is it?
What are the conditions like? What prized possessions do you bring?
(maybe include pictures). How do you feel when you first see the Statue
of Liberty?
-
Journal Entry #3: Describe your experience going though
immigration. What inspections do you have to go through? What types of
problems do you face? (Include pictures or other artifacts)
Why are you coming to America?
-
Journal Entry #4: Describe
your new life. What is it like? Where are you living? How is your life different in America? How
are you
functioning here: communicating, making money, eating, and living? Find
a picture of your new city- from that time period and include it in
your journal. Do you have plans
for the future?
-
Journal Entry #5: Write
a conclusion. Think about all that you have been
through to risk coming to this country. Explain your feelings and
thoughts.
How does your story end? What do you learn from your
triumphs and tribulations? How does your admission into
this country contribute the United States of America?
What, if anything, should have been done differently? This is your conclusion.
4. Your final task is to create a
realistic and authentic cover for your journal. Make it look original
and old. These will be displayed for everyone to read.
