Internet Safety

The Internet is a fantastic place, full of information and resources, but for parents and teachers it becomes important to keep children safe from the risks as well.  Many parents and teachers might find it challenging to keep up with technology and some of its dangers.  Social networking sites, text messaging, cyber-bullying, chat rooms, games, file sharing, and pornography are just some of the problem areas on the Internet.

As a parent, one of the best ways to keep your child safe on the Internet is to become Internet-savvy yourself.  Learn how to use a browser and to search on the Internet.  Visit sites for children and learn which ones are safe.  Visit the social networking sites, such as www.myspace.com and look for your child's name(s); also google your child's name.  If necessary, take a class, but there is no substitute for spending some time online yourself.  If you do not stay informed, your child may be able to hide his/her online activities.  Another way to stay informed is to subscribe to a computer magazine or visit informational sites.
