The key to success in math class is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE !
(Just as it is for basketball, cheerleading, soccer, etc.) Students will have daily math homework (practice), and it is expected that all assignments will be completed neatly, in a timely fashion, and that all work will be shown.
Junior High students are offered two opportunities to challenge themselves in the area mathematics:
MathCounts
MathCounts is a national program which builds problem solving skills and encourages students to solve problems in a creative manner. Students meet weekly (on Thursday until 4:15pm) starting on September 22.
If you would like to learn more about this challenging, skill building, and fun problem solving national program visit the MathCounts Website !
Pennsylvania Mathematics League (PML)
Junior High students are invited to Central Catholic High School on a Friday in February to compete in this statewide competition. This is a one-time only after school commitment so it is a great way for those students who have many after school activities to also take some time to challenge themselves in the area of mathematics. Students will take several practice PML tests during math class to help prepare for the competition.
Classroom Policy
Junior High teachers try to instill a sense of responsibility in each student. Our students will be leaving STM shortly, and it is imperative that they understand that they are responsible for their success. Good work habits are stressed and expected. If a student misses a class due to any reason, it is up to that student to obtain all assignments, missed notes, classwork, etc. Please make sure that your child has at least one study buddy in each class.
