A Wed. session will also be offered if numbers warrent it.
My name is Mrs. Janet Plangemann. I am a member of St. Thomas More Parish and have been teaching art here at STM for eleven years. All kindergarten through eighth grade students have art class once a week in the art room located on the first floor of the main building. We routinely integrate art with grade level subject areas such as literature, social studies, religion, and math. Students have the opportunity to create art and explore a wide variety of art media. Through the use of information technology, slides, and fine art prints, students are exposed to a wide variety of artists and their artwork.
Seventh graders recently studied Gothic Architecture, exploring the features of such Gothic cathedrals as Notre Dame in Paris. Students learned about groin vaults and flying buttresses, features which allowed for taller buildings, thinner walls, and windows. We examined rose windows and of course, gargoyles. Students learned that gargoyles were originally used to move water away from the cathedral walls. Thus, gargoyles were originally waterspouts! Students then began creating their own clay gargoyles which will be glazed and fired. Look for their finished projects displayed in the colonnade.
Sixth graders are currently wrapping up their designs for their "modernized" Egyptian masks. Check them out in our colonnade display. Next for sixth graders will be exploring Greek and Roman architecture, focusing on Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns.
Fifth graders are finishing up their own version of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night.
Each year in the spring, the annual CYO Art Competition takes place. This contest , open to students in grades five through eight is highly competitive and includes a variety of categories.
Remember that submitted artwork must be matted. Artwork can be projects completed in school or on your own. Photography was added as a new category this past year.
The following are photographs of the artwork of past STM Diocesan winners.
