This Month's Projects
May - June:
Computer Lab Hours
Mornings:
Computer class
for the 4th through 8th grades is a laboratory-oriented course with complete hands-on class time. Designed to introduce students to computer applications, projects are given to provide an experience with up-to-date computer software applications and hardware. Projects are often coordinated with core subjects as a joint project in which the students receive a computer grade as well as a grade for the core class. Students use current devices for backing up and copying their files.
The tools used include Microsoft Windows word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications, as well as use of the Internet. The main objective of the computer classes is to allow students to enjoy the computer while learning current topics.

If a student is absent on a day that computer class is held, it is the student's responsibility to come to me upon returning to school to set up plans for making up the missed work. The student is not to wait until the following week's computer class to discuss this with me since at that time the class will be moving on to the next task. Missed work must be made up prior to the next computer class. I have discussed this with the students, and I appreciate the parents' support in reminding them of this policy. Thank you!
This year the 4th graders will become more proficient and independent with basic functions of Microsoft Word. They will also be introduced to tables while creating Advent calendars. Students will practice their typing skills via typing programs as well as typing assignments.
In 5th grade, students will review Microsoft Word's table feature. They will improve their skills with Word's formatting functions via various class assignments including a several-page Immigrant paper for Social Studies. They will begin to use a flash drive and will understand more clearly the hierarchical folder structure of the computer. They will be introduced to Excel and will do a project using PowerPoint.
Students in 6th grade will use Excel, PowerPoint, and Word to increase their skills with more advanced features of these products. They will also be introduced to Publisher to work on a joint project with Social Studies. They will need to tap into their creativity as they will also will make an advertisement for their newspapers.
Students will also learn more advanced features of Word such as column manipulation to create author cards for English. They will create a famous author card and one for themselves as they author books as an English writing assignment.
Students will become more proficient using flash drives and moving around between folders on the computer.
This year, 7th grade students will continue to have their expertise grow in Word and Excel with more advanced topics and assignments. Publisher is also used as a tool for a Social Studies related assignment on Australia.
Excel is also stressed this year since it is a valuable tool that is used for their PJAS projects as well as for high school projects. More advanced features are presented and used in creating various charts.
The 8th graders will research and learn about operating systems in order to begin to develop an understanding of how computers work. This assignment requires extensive word processing formatting skills. The project not only technically incorporates computer skills but some journalism skills as well.
Excel will also be stressed this year in preparation for high school. It is also required for their PJAS projects.
Students are introduced to webpage creation at the end of the year. This assignment requires the students to create their own webpage, all about them. It is a fun, challenging, and up to date assignment that they will enjoy.
