ACTIVITIES & CLUBS

All clubs are dependent on availability of moderators.

 

ACADEMIC BOWL - Grades 7 & 8

A team competition similar to Scholastic Scrimmage. Individuals must answer a toss-up question so the team can work together on bonus questions. All students who pass the qualifying test may try out for the team. After many weeks of competition among participants, a team of 8 students will be chosen to represent STM at the annual competition at Allentown Central Catholic High School. The winning team advances to represent our district in the Diocesan competition.

 

ALTAR SERVER - Grades 5 – 8, Parish Activity

Open to all boys and girls in the parish from 5th through 8th grade. Individuals assist the celebrant in the Sacrifice of the Mass and other liturgical events. Training is held for four days, two-hours per day, one week in June and one week in August.

 

ARTS FESTIVAL - Grades 7 & 8

Displays student art in conjunction with the spring 7th & 8th grade play.

 

ARTS FESTIVAL PLAY - Grades 7 & 8

Spring play is open to all students in grades 7 and 8. Practices are scheduled from February through April, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

 

BAND - Beginner Level – Grades 4 -8 and Advanced Level – Grades 7 & 8

Registration in addition to a new parent meeting in October is required. Performances are held at Christmas and in the Spring at STM School. Performances are also held at the Diocesan Band Festival at Allentown Central Catholic or Bethlehem Catholic high schools. Instrument music lessons are required. Our Band Director may recommend certain Advanced Level students to audition for the Diocesan Honors Band.  Practice for the Honors Band is held for 4 to 5 Saturdays in February and March. Advanced Level students are eligible to join the Allentown Central Catholic Marching Band at home football games.

 

CHESS CLUB - Grades 4 – 8

Open to all students in 4th through 8th grades, from experienced through beginner, regardless of skill level. Meetings are held every Thursday beginning the last week in September through March.

 

CHILDREN’S CHOIR - Grades 2 – 8, Parish Activity

The choir is open to all students in the parish and sings at various 9:00am Sunday Masses. Periodically, members of the choir may audition for the STM Summer Music Theatre.  

 

CHRISTMAS PLAY - Grades 5 – 6

A class project for all students in grades 5 and 6. Students may audition for specific parts. Two performances will be scheduled in December, one in the daytime and one in the evening.

 

DANCE TEAM - Grades 6 – 8

The Dance Team perform at boys’ and girls’ basketball games, pep rallies and other community events designed to promote school spirit.
                      

DIOCESAN ART CONTEST - Grades 5 – 8

DIOCESAN DECLAMATION CONTEST - Grades 7 – 8

Students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible to participate in a competition held during the spring. Each contestant will deliver, from memory, a previously published speech. Practice will be held from January through April.  

 

E-SPORTS CLUB - Grades 5 – 8

Students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible to participate in a new, experimental club designed to involve them in interactive, skill building activity. Participants compete against fellow students in an intramural league beginning with Madden NFL. Depending on the success of the league, additional games may be added at a later date.

 

HISTORY DAY - Grades 6 – 8

A year-long program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression. Students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. Selected students are entered into a series of contests at the local and affiliate levels and an annual national competition in the nation’s capital in June.

 

HOMEWORK CLUB - Grades 6 – 8

Meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the library. Students having a difficult time completing assignments are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity.  The club is staffed by an Instructional Support Teacher and other staff members. Students may sign up  on an “as needed” basis and can also be referred by a teacher or parent.

 

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM - Grades 4 – 8

Registration and a new parent meeting in October is required to participate in this program. A yearly fee, still to be determined, will be charged.  Instruments may be rented through Nazareth Music Shop.

 

MATH COUNTS - Grades 7 – 8

Open to interested 7th and 8th grade students during the first few weeks of school. All students, regardless of ability, are encouraged to participate. September and October meetings are held after school one day each week at 4:15pm. Beginning in November, a team will be selected for competitions in the PA Mathematics League.

 

MORE NEWS - Grades 7 – 8

The school newspaper is open to all students in 7th and 8th grades interested in developing article ideas, research topics, interview subjects, as well as writing, editing and taking pictures. There are 3 to 4 meetings per session plus 2 meetings to finalize and collate the issue before distribution. Three issues are produced per year. 

 

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND - Grades 1 – 8

An international creativity competition involving various teams charged with solving open-ended problems with solutions presented in skit form.  Teams will meet once a week from September through January and twice per week from January through March.  Regional and state competitions are held during the spring. 

 

PA JUNIOR ACADEMY OF SCIENCE (PJAS) - Grades 7 – 8

A statewide organization of students designed to stimulate and promote interest in science through the development of research projects and investigations. Students are eligible to enter their work in a state competition held in May at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park.

 

PA MATH LEAGUE COMPETITION - Grades 7 – 8

Prerequisite required in General Math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Beginning in November, meetings will be limited to a team who will enter competitions in the PA Mathematics League. Competitors will take several practice tests during the school year prior to entering a competition at Allentown Central Catholic High School in March or April. After school meeting will not be held.

 

PEER LEADERS - Grades 7 – 8, Guidance Counselors

A service club designed to help classroom teachers in various capacities, including but not limited to working with younger students. Students are expected to keep their commitment throughout the school year.

 

ROBOTICS TEAM - Grades 6 – 8

Open to all 6th through 8th grade students who are interested in learning about and working with robots. Teams will design and build a robot to compete against each other in a series of specific challenges. The winning team will enter their robot in a competition among other schools.

 

SCOUTS - Parish Activity

Boys: (Age) Cub Scout (ages 8-10); Boy Scouts (ages 11-18).
Girls (Grade): 
Daisies (K-1); Brownies (2-3); Juniors (4-5); Cadettes (6-8); Seniors (9-10); Ambassadors (11-12)

STAGE PRESENTATION - Grades 7 – 8

Open to all students in grades 7 and 8, a performance will be held in conjunction with the Arts Festival in mid-May. Practices will be scheduled from February through April, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.

 

STM SCOOP (NEWS STUDIO) - Grades 7 – 8

This program is designed to instruct students about broadcast journalism.  Students learn how to set-up, produce, edit and broadcast a daily student produced school news show.  Selected students may audition for positions such as director, broadcaster, script writer, audio technician, graphics designer and camera operator.  

 

STUDENT SERVICE COUNCIL - Grade 8

The purpose of the club is to provide students the opportunity to serve as tour guides and welcoming committees at school functions and events.  Students must be available to participate in the evenings and weekends. After the completion of 7th grade students may volunteer for certain service committees.  

 

TECHNOLOGY CLUB - Grades 5 - 8

The club offers technology development for students in grades 5 through 8. Teams are afforded different problem-solving opportunities and challenges that allow them to develop their individual skill as well as provide support to the school’s technology infrastructure. Grade 5 students help manage and develop our digital signage displays throughout the school. These displays offer students and faculty information as well as news and updates. Grade 6 students help manage and maintain the school’s technology, as well as having opportunities to develop those skills by innovating new ways to put that technology to use. Grade 7 and 8 students are eligible to become a member of the school news team.  

 

WINTER SPORTS CLUB - Grades 7 – 8

Students can enjoy skiing, snowboarding or snow tubing with fellow classmates at special student nights scheduled at local ski resorts.  Lessons and rental equipment will be available upon request.       

 

YEARBOOK - Grades 7 – 8

The Chancellor is open to all students in grades 7 and 8. The staff participates in all aspects of developing a history of the current school year. Meetings are held at STM after school from September through March.
