TECHNOLOGY

As a school, we are committed to preparing students to be literate and responsible citizens in a 21st century world. By immersing our students in a technology-rich instructional environment, they are developing the following:

  • Proficiency and fluency with various technological tools

  • Ability to work collaboratively building connections and relationships with others to solve problems

  • Ability to design and share information to meet a variety of purposes

  • Opportunities to manage, analyze, and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information

  • Ability to create, critique, analyze, and evaluate multimedia texts

  • Ethical responsibility required by these complex environments.

  • Improved learning experiences through engagement, various forms of ongoing assessment, differentiation, and individualized learning paths.

Technology Staff

Our technology department oversees and maintains approximately 700  devices supporting both staff and students. We maintain and support a robust wired and wireless technology infrastructure in a multi-platform environment. Members of the department work closely with teachers and students to develop the most effective uses of technology for learning. We provide coaching for both teachers and students as well as professional learning to advance student learning and facilitate the use of technology for research, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and innovation.

Opportunities for students

Our student led Tech Team helps support the effective use of technology in the classroom. This program available for students in grades 5-8 functions as an extension of the Technology Department and provides support in the classroom for other students and teachers.

Our team manages the Digital Display in the main foyer posting information about school news and upcoming events on a daily basis.

In addition, the team is developing a live stream morning show to deliver announcements to our school community.

STEM Course Information

Students in all grades have access to learning spaces and resources that provide opportunities for STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). In addition to our two science labs, students have access to our MakerSpace, where they participate in learning opportunities to apply math, technology  and science concepts in hands-on collaborative experiences. Maker resources such as Lego WeDo, and Mindstorms, littleBits electronic building kits, and robotics offer numerous collaborative and creative learning opportunities.

In our iLab, students in grades 6-8 participate in a Tech Class held once every six day cycle. The sixth grade technology program teaches both the hardware and coding necessary to create a variety of gadgets. Students begin programming microcontrollers and progress to add 3D printing and electronic components to their projects. Students move on to robotics where they learn to design,

build, program and test their robots to tackle a variety of challenges. In seventh grade, students focus on visual technology skills.

The first two trimesters are dedicated to website design and html coding. During the third trimester, students explore stop motion animation techniques and create a wide variety of videos applying these skills. During eighth grade, students learn to program in Python. In each class, students improve their skills by combining new commands with previous knowledge to tackle programming challenges.  The year culminates with students designing and coding their own digital games.
